Why starting school can be very stressful for children

It's natural likely for your child to get stressed when starting school. At first your child will probably be excited about riding the bus and meeting other children. Making new friends and having someone to play with everyday. But then by the time you get to the school to let them go, well, this is when things might take a turn to the stress mode.

While going to school for the first time can be exciting for some children, it could also be stressful for others. Any sudden change in a child's routine can make it very stressful for the child.

Most schools have a counselor there to help your child deal with the stress of being separated from their parent and can provide guidance to your child and to you if you should need it as well.

All children act differently when it comes to signs of stress. Some kids are sad or may get a stomach ache, while others might cry or keep to themselves. There are many different signs of stress that a child can show and not all at one time. Children can be preoccupied and have problems following the directions given by the teacher or even getting their assignments done on time. And some children might have difficulty concentrating.

Even though your child might be excited about starting school, sometimes when they first get there, it is not what they expected. It could be scary at first. They have to learn to cope with larger buildings that they are not use to. The rules and the other things they have to adjust to can stress any child. With so many different rules for a child to remember, it's no wonder they would get stressed when they begin school.

Sometimes, children can become stressed from starting school because they began too young. A lot of children are better off starting school a bit later. If your child is smaller or younger than the other children, then this might make them feel uncomfortable. So they will then become stressed.

You can help your child get ready for school if you take the time to talk to them and let them know you have self-assurance in the fact that they will get along with the new challenges they will be dealing with by themselves.

When your child is in school, it can also be a tiresome day for them. If your child is use to taking a nap during the day but they don't get one at school, this could very well stress them out. No matter what the cause is for the stress, your child could benefit from your support the first few weeks of school.

It is a big step for any child and it will also take time for your child to get use to school. If you work together with the teachers and support your child, this will help them to do better. Once they get use to the routine, they will be fine.
